Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/269/13414
Date
[1356-1361]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Ramsey.
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Abbot of Ramsey
Nature of request
The abbot requests that the justices of common pleas be commanded to proceed in his suit against the bishop of Ely for 500 acres of marsh in Ramsey, notwithstanding that the temporalities of the bishopric are in the king's hand, the justices having delayed on this account.
Nature of endorsement
They should have a writ to the justices of common pleas to proceed to take the inquisition provided that they do not proceed to render judgment without the king's council.
Places mentioned
Ramsey, [Huntingdonshire].
People mentioned
Thomas [de Lisle], Bishop of Ely.
Note
The petition dates to 1356-1361 as Bishop de Lisle fled into exile in 1356 and died in exile in 1361 and it is clear that at the time of this petition the bishop's lands were in the king's hand, and this presumably dates it to after the bishop's exile (Aberth, J., Criminal Churchmen in the Age of Edward III: The Case of Bishop Thomas de Lisle, (Pennsylvania, 1996), pp.161-182). A case had been initiated in the court of Common Pleas in Michaelmas term 1355, and the case was not finally resolved until after the bishop's death, ironically in favour of the bishop (ibid. pp.32-8).
