Note
The petition is dated to 1284-1300 in accordance with the dating suggested in Rees's discussion of the petition. Rees notes that Crevecoeur exchanged his lordship of Maelor Saesneg with Overton with Edw. I and Queen Eleanor in 1283, and that the queen held Overton at her death in 1290. The petition must date to not long after this exchange because no mention is made of the queen, or to some time after her death when the king recovered his lordship. In addition, the petition refers to Havering as being the king's lieutenant at this time, and he was deputy to the justice of North Wales from 1284 until his appointment as justice in 1295. Clearly Havering was in office at the time of the making of this petition so that the date must be from 1284 to 1300, and if the term 'king's lieutenant' means justice of North Wales rather than deputy, then from 1295 to 1300. Rather bizarrely, although Rees cites all of this evidence, he opts for a date of 1280-1283, a time when Crevecoeur seemingly still held Overton, and when Havering was not in office (Petitions Relating to Wales, p.455).
