Description
Petitioners
Consuls and community of Agen.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The consuls and community of Agen make seven petitions:1) They state that the Agenais has been brought into a state of ruin by negligence and misconduct of the King's officials. They request the provision of stricter and more diligent officials, and also that certain great men might be sent into the duchy to inquire into the behaviour of these officials.2) They states that Amaneu de Fossaco claims that his house of Madaillan is a castle and has jurisdiction over the parishes of Cardonnet and of the Blessed Mary of Frayssas, although this has always belonged to the city of Agen, and he has acquired an inquisition into the value of this jurisdiction, to the deceit of the King. They ask the King to order to Seneschal of Gascony to determine to whom this jurisdiction belongs, and to defend and maintain this person in his right.3) They state that the Abbot and convent of Poitiers have built a bastide in the parish of Penthavila, which is within their jurisdiction, and they have appealed to the Seneschal of Gascony on this. They ask the King to order him to do justice swiftly.4) They state that the Seneschal of Gascony is claiming right of institution of officials in the Agenais, which belongs to the Seneschal of the Agenais, and usurps his rights in other ways. They ask that he might be ordered to desist from this.5) They state that a new settlement at St Sardos in the Agenais is harmful to the King's jurisdiction, and request a remedy.6) They state that officials, and especially the Seneschals of the Agenais and of Gascony, take people's bedding and animals against their will and without paying, and when asked to return them claim not to have them or to have lost them. They ask that they might be ordered to desist from this.7) They ask for various measures to be put in place to reform the system of tolls asked from them for the repair of bridges and roads, so that the money may be raised with less harm to them.
