The sub-prior and convent request that as the king is seised of the avowry of their church that he grant that they may proceed to elect another prior.[The petition recites a long list of evidence presented by them, including a charter, bulls and acts of several kings, popes and archbishops of Canterbury].

Note
The petition is dated to c. 1321 as the petition relates to the protracted dispute over the right to elect a successor to Prior Wetacre who died in 1318, the petition referring to that prior's death 2 years earlier. The petition can be no later than 1321 as the matter was finally resolved when the king restored the right to the advowson to the archbishop of Canterbury, and John of Sholden, the cellarer of Dover was elected as prior (CPR 1317-21, p.531; Heads of Religious Houses, vol. II, p.98).
