Nature of request
[Petition in 6 parts; the petitions are badly faded and damaged:]1) The clerks request that all 'causes de contraire' which belong to the chancellor and other judges of the university can recognized and terminated by them notwithstanding the prohibition of the king.2) The clerks request that they be granted cognizance of all manner of trespasses done within the town and that the chancellor not be disturbed in this by the present king.3) They request that the assize granted to them that wine should not be sold for more than a half-penny dearer for a gallon that it is London as many taverners sell new wines for what they will to the damage of all.4) They request a charter so that the mayor and bailiffs be bound to come with sufficient force to maintain peace when necessary, and that the chancellor may require them to take, imprison and safe-guard the malefactors.5) They request a charter so that the chancellor can imprison malefactors in Oxford Castle or in the town's prison, and that the sheriff, constable or warden of the castle will keep them safely.6) They request that the mayor of Oxford be empowered to distrain clerks and lay tenants to pave against their tenements and repair the pavement when need be, and to remove corruptions that happen through butchers.1)

Copy of a grant of King Henry to the chancellor [of Oxford] of cognizance of all pleas concerning clerks.2) Copy of a grant of King Edward of cognizance of all trespasses committed in the [? town] of Oxford.3) Grant concerning the sale of wine in Oxford at the petition of the masters and scholars of Oxford.4) Order of King Edward concerning a royal order to the mayor and bailiffs of the town of Oxford to assist the chancellor of the university in the arrest of malefactors.5) Order concerning the detainment of malefactors in Oxford Castle.6) Order by writ to the mayor, bailiffs and commonalty of Oxford to repair the paving and clear the streets of dung.
