Note
The grant dates to 1397 with the petition with which the grant was formerly enclosed (SC 8/266/13297). The grant itself is difficult to date with certainty as it is clearly a grant of Edward I, and refers to a date after the death of Queen Eleanor in 1290 but the dating clause makes this 5 December, 2 [Edw. I] which would make the grant of 1273. This is clearly an error for either 22 or 32 Edw. I [1293 or 1303]. As Hugh de Cressingham's eyre was held in Cumberland in the period 1292-3, the date of 1293 seems more likely, perhaps also as the death of Queen Eleanor in 1292, the king having remarried by 1303 (Crook, D., Records of the General Eyre, p.170-2).
