Nature of request
Joan, late the wife of Thomas de Ippegrave, states that the king has granted her for life ten pounds a year from the town of Winchelsea, but that the bailiffs, claiming that the town is badly destroyed by the sea, make payment so poorly that the ten pounds do not amount to as much as ten marks per year to her benefit. Therefore William Maufe and the said Joan, now his wife, request that they may hold the town for their lifetime on payment of the farm to the king, and that the ten pounds a year may be allowed to them.

Sussex.The petition of Joan late the wife of Thomas of Hyppegrave.Before the lord king.She should be content with what she has.And if the bailiffs do not pay let distraint be made.Declare from which Winchelsea she seeks this, New or Old.
