Description
Petitioners
Hugh Ferrant of Skipton in Craven.
Name(s)
Ferrant, Hugh
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ferrant requests the restoration of the keeping of the gate of Skipton castle as it was granted to his grandfather by William de Forz, but the petitioner's father was ousted by the queen's bailiffs after the castle had come into the king's hand.
Nature of endorsement
Order for an inquisition into the father's seisin and removal, and the circumstances of that, and in whose hands the said bailiwick now is, etc.; and that inquisition is to be returned before the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer, who are to call others of the council and do justice to him, and this is to be ordered to the treasurer and barons by writ of Chancery.
Places mentioned
Skipton, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Craven, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
William de Forz, count of Aumale
Hugh Ferrant, grandfather of the petitioner
Henry Ferrant, father of the petitioner
Isabel [de Forz], countess of Aumale
Eleanor [of Castile], Queen of England.
Note
The petition dates to 1307 as an inquisition was held into the matter on 24 June 1307, and as the petition refers to an inquisition held into this matter, it seems likely that the petition dates to the second half of that year especially as the petition refers to Eleanor of Castile as the king's mother (CIM 1219-1307, no.2027).
