SC 8/265/13231
Date
[c. 1299]
Description
Petitioners
Jordan le Maon, son of William le Maon.
Name(s)
Maon, Jordan
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Jordan le Maon, who is underage, recounts how Brachamp, in the right of Denise, his wife, demanded from him the third part of his inheritance, to which Jordan's adviser and his attorney proposed that Denise had sufficiently had her part, which was held of his brother Ralph with whom she lived voluntarily, and whose death, by agreement of the parties, an inquisition was taken before Cobham in which it was said on oath that le Marcheant, Cobham's bailiff, on the suspicion that he hated the petitioner and supported the other party, was removed from the court, so that Jordan and his adviser dwelled in peace from Cheney's time until the Prior of Wenlock made le Marcheant bailiff again, and he reopened the case, and Jordan's attorney proposed that le Marcheant was as suspect as he had been held before. This exception was not opposed and the bailiff awarded Brachamp the third part of Jordan's inheritance. The petitioner requests remedy and restoration of the third part, with damages.
Nature of endorsement
Because the defendant is not present, the plaint is to stand until the lord king order the hearer of pleas in [? Parliament] etc.
Places mentioned
Channel Islands
Wenlock (Much Wenlock), [Shropshire].
People mentioned
William le Maon
John de Brachamp
Denise [Brachamp], wife of John de Brachamp
Ralph le Maon, brother of the petitioner
Henry de Cobeham (Cobham), late Warden of the Channel Islands
Pierre le Marcheant (le Marchant), bailiff under Henry de Cobham
Nicholas de Chaene (Cheney), late Warden of the Channel Islands
[Henry de Bonvillars], Prior of Wenlock.
Note
Henry de Cobham was warden of the Channel Islands from 1294-7 and Nicholas de Cheney from 1297-8. Bonvillars, prior of Wenlock was subwarden in 1294 and 1298. Le Marchant was bailiff of Guernsey in 1298-9, 1304-5 and 1317-18. However, the petition claims Le Marchant was bailiff under Cobham, making the appointment of 1298 under Bonvillars his second. However, the reference to the Prior of Wenlock suggests that the petition probably relates to the Channel Islands eyre of 1299-1300 (see Crook, Records of the General Eyre, pp.191-2).
