Curpel requests remedy because by an inquisition held in the octave of St Martin before Hengham and Smalham he was imprisoned for a trespass done to the abbot of Derham, of which the damages amounted to 40s, until he was released by order of the King who then pardoned him for this trespass, and so the abbot bribed the justices to increase his damages to £10, so that the sheriff has made levy of Curpel's goods to the value of over 20 marks to his very great damage.1)
