Nature of request
The petitioners recount that when they brought their wool and other merchandises from England to Antwerp to make their profit to the value of £284 9s 9d, the Duke of Brabant took the wool and merchandises without paying them anything. Brumpton and Spigurnel went to Brabant on the King's order to follow up the matter and the duke gave them a deed obligatory that he would pay the money to the petitioners, on which day the merchants were at Ghent to receive their payment but had nothing. The merchants, at their suit, had the King's writ asking that the duke pay them, but had nothing. Then a proclamation was made at Yarmouth, at the Duke's request and by the King's writ, that these merchants whom the Duke owed should come to Brabant to receive their payment, whereby they sued for their payment and again had nothing. The petitioners request that a writ be sent to Boston, Ipswich, Great Yarmouth and St Ives to arrest the goods of merchants of Brabant to the same value plus damages according to the tenure of the obligation.1)
Nature of endorsement
The obligation should be shown before the Chancellor, and they should then have remedy as was ordained in similar cases. [Cancelled]2) Because the obligation was shown before the council, they should have a writ ordering the bailiffs to make arrests of good, powerful men of the Duchy of Brabant gathering at the markets there, and they should certify these arrests to the King. And they should further do as is customary in similar cases etc.
