Nature of request
The monks of St Martin's, Dover request that:1) whereas the King has the advowson of their church and they have been without a prior for two years, that they can have a prior from their own college, as Edward I allowed them to at their last vacancy;2) the sentence given them and the damages done to them by the prior and chapter of Holy Trinity, Canterbury after the death of Archbishop Robert by repealed by the current archbishop as was ordained in the parliament at York;3) they be allowed to receive clerks to their abbey since there is a great deficit because many brothers have died and they have had no new monks for the past six years;4) in each vacancy of the archbishopric of Canterbury neither the prior [of Canterbury] nor chapter nor archdeacon nor any other minister have or do anything in the church of Dover, and that the prior, chapter and archdeacon of Canterbury can be tried and examined in the King's court and not elsewhere.

Note
There is no date on the guard. The petition refers to the death of Archbishop Winchelsey (1313), to the death of their own prior (1318, see SC 8/128/6387) and to the York parliament of 1322, and so must post-date these events. Reference is made to Edward I being the King's father. The petition must therefore date between 1322 and 1327.
