Nature of request
The abbot and convent of Bury St Edmunds request that whereas Berton and other evil men set fire to their abbey and nine of their manors, corn of 29 carucates of land and the stock belonging to the manors, of which trespass he was attainted and kept in the abbot's prison, from which he escaped, and then he and his company went to the abbot's manor of Chevington and seized all his treasure there and 35 horses, and brought them overseas where he detained them for 31 weeks, for which trespass he was outlawed by process made in London and Suffolk, and he has entered the company of powerful men who want him pardoned, that the King consider if someone who has done such things should be pardoned.

Dated on the guard to c. 1327, with reference to CPR 1327-30, p. 217, a 1327 oyer and terminer concerning disturbances at the abbey of Bury St Edmunds, and to CIM 1307-49, p. 264 (no.1070), a 1329 inquisition into a theft from the treasury of Bury St Edmunds. Richard of Draughton was abbot of Bury St Edmunds from 1312 to 1335.
