Description

William de Nevyle (Neville); Felice de Neville, wife of William de Neville.
Name(s)
de Nevyle (Neville); de Neville, William; Felice
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William and Felice Neville state that Nowers died holding the manor of Wymington of them by knight's service, and holding nothing of the King in chief, and thus the keeping of the manor should have belonged to them because of the nonage of his heir. However, the escheator seised the manor into the King's hand, wherefore the petitioners purchased a writ of Chancery for Gloucester to enquire how and of whom the manor is held. This found by inquisition that the petitioners held the manor by homage and knight's service and seisin was returned to them. However, the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer have taken them to court before them over the manor when it is a common plea and should be sued in the Bench or in eyre. They therefore request that their case should be tried by the common law and not elsewhere.
Nature of endorsement
They should come to the Exchequer and ... according to Magna Carta, and do what should be done.
