Reference
SC 8/263/13148
Date
[c. 1330]
Description
Petitioners
Not specified.
Addressees
King and privy council.
Nature of request
When Despenser's goods and chattels, worth over £100, were forfeited, the profit should have come to the King but was seized by the Prior of Launde. The same prior and convent have purchased lands contrary to the statute [against putting lands in mortmain] and had these confirmed in their charter. They also have lands worth £100 yearly which were taxed before they came into their hands but since have brought no profit to the King. All of these things are done with the knowledge of the bailiffs and other serjeants and assessors of the country. Many people request remedy, lest the whole land fall into the hand of Religion.
Nature of endorsement
This petition should be sent to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer and they should examine it and the things which it contains, and do what must be done for the King's profit.
Places mentioned
Launde, Leicestershire.
People mentioned
Hugh le Despenser, the father
[Henry de Braunseton], Prior of Launde.
