Nature of request
The burgesses of Scarborough request that whereas by their petition at the last parliament at York they requested remedy for certain lands and tenements wasted by the sea in Scarborough, which lands the King ordered Scarborough, Bergh and Sherburn to enquire into, which inquisition the justices have returned in Chancery, but no execution has been made, that the King and council examine the inquisition and grant a writ to enclose and defend the said lands in salvation of the town.1)
Nature of endorsement
Let the inquisition come before the council.2) It should be ordered by writ of the great seal to the sheriff of Yorkshire, repeating the said commission and inquisition, that he should make known to the said tenants if alive, or their heirs if dead, that they should repair and defend their tenements against the sea between now and St Martin next, and if they do not the King will take the tenements into his hand and do as he will for the salvation of the town. And that the sheriff should return the writ in Chancery on the octave of St Martin and make known to the tenants that if they do not defend their tenements in the meantime, they shall have a day in Chancery to explain why their tenements should not be taken into the King's hand and delivered to others for defence against the sea and the salvation of the town.
