Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/263/13146
Date
[1334]
Description
Petitioners
Roger de Sheffeld (Sheffield), clerk.
Name(s)
de Sheffeld (Sheffield), Roger
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
clerk
Nature of request
Sheffeld requests a writ of the great or privy seal to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer discharging him of the sum of 40 marks which the Exchequer is demanding from him for the farm of the church of Kirkby Fleetham, of which he was lately keeper, to his great damage. By order of Edward II he was to pay the farm to Wingfield, receiver of the profits from the lands of the templars, and had done so. The king's order was lost amongst the king's remembrances abandoned at the battle of Stirling [Bannockburn], but it can be witnessed by many good men of England.
Nature of endorsement
Because it is sufficiently attested before the council that the deed that Sheffeld has as evidence of payment is Wingfield's, it is ordered by writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they receive the deed and discharge Sheffeld, and they should charge the heirs, the tenants of the land and the executors of Wingfield as reason demands.
Places mentioned
Kirkby Fleetham, [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Stirling, [Stirlingshire, Scotland].
People mentioned
Roger de Wyngefeld (Wingfield), late receiver of the Chamber.
Note
Dated on the guard to 1334, since this is the date of the parliament to which it belongs (Rot. Parl. Vol. II, p. 79).
