Reference
SC 8/262/13090
Date
[? c. 1345-? c. 1365]
Description
Petitioners
Jurats and community of St Macaire.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged.]The jurats and community of St Macaire make two petitions:1) They state that a new toll has been granted to the Vicomte of Benauges and Castillon for a certain period of time, which is very harmful to them and to the people of Libourne, and ask that it might be annulled.2) [Only a fragment of this petition remains.]
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] It seems to the council that the King should order the vicomte to cease from the taking of this toll.[On dorse] This is the bill of St Macaire. [There are other words in a different hand, now illegible]
Places mentioned
St Macaire, [Guyenne, France]
Libourne, [Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
Peter (Peir) [de Grailly], Vicomte of Benauges and Castillon.
Note
The hand of this petition would seem to suggest a date of around 1345-1365. There are instructions to acquit the people of St Macaire of a toll levied from them in Bordeaux on m. 6 of C 61/70, dated 16 May 32 Edward III (1358): but from what can be read of this petition, this would seem to be a different toll.
