Date
[1310-1311]
Description
Petitioners
Inhabitants of Labourd.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The inhabitants of Labourd make four requests:1) They state that when the Bishop of Norwich and the Earl of Richmond were sent to Gascony by the King they ordained that the people were to be quit of service of lodging for a certain payment. They ask that this might be ratified and confirmed by the King's letters patent.2) They state that the Constable of Bordeaux had made a settlement with them concerning the debts they owed the King, and ask that this might be ratified and confirmed by the King's letters patent.3) They ask that the seine-nets and fisheries in the River Demyne, which are hazardous to shipping, might be removed.4) They state that certain nobles are introducing foreign livestock their pastures and herbages, to their great harm, and ask that the Seneschal of Gascony might be ordered to have this stopped.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] This petition cannot be granted because it would be in disinheritance of the King, and if the people named here granted it, they did not have power to do so.[To second] This petition is answered like the first.[To third] [The King] will order the Seneschal of Gascony that, when he has called those who are to be called, he is to have the nuisances removed from the river, according to what has reasonably been the custom.[To fourth] The King will order his Seneschal to inform himself on this. And, having consideration for the poor, he is to do justice to all.[None on dorse]
