Description
Petitioners
Proctors and messengers of the barons and other nobles and of the corporations and communities of the cities and towns and of the individual people of Gascony, the Agenais and Saintonge.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners make a request, containing nine points;1) [Partly illegible] That people might be appointed to oversee the alliances and ordinances entered into by the English.2) Also the defences and remedies by which the King's grandfather defended his subjects from disinheritance and destruction.3) Also the defences and remedies ordained by the King's grandfather and his counsellors when they saw that the previous defences and remedies were no longer sufficient.4) Also the reasons why these dangers are now greater than in the past, and these remedies more necessary.5) Also the reasons why these remedies have been delayed since the thirty-fourth year of the King's grandfather, and the great harms that have arisen and could arise because of this - with a view to reinstating and continuing these remedies until better can be found.6) [Partly illegible] Also to survey the remedies ordained by the council of the King's grandfather for the recovery of the Duchy of Normandy and other lands, especially with regard to forfeiture by the French and the breaking of peace treaties with the French - with a view to seeing if these remedies could help the present King to acquire the lands of the inheritance of his uncle, the King of France and Navarre, which are wrongly withheld from him.7) To note that the peers and presidents of the court of France have used two methods of gaining their ends, both in conquest of lands and in defence of their lord the King: firstly appealing to the court of Rome, and secondly, force of arms.8) That the council of the . . . of the King have always used the same form in all their enterprises of war for the aforesaid end, and especially against the King of France, with a view to avoiding forfeiture.9) That the King's father twice fell into forfeiture because of a lack of good people of his council to explain his right before he entered into his wars against the King of France, or to justify them.
