Description
Petitioners
Consuls and community of Condom.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The consuls and community of Condom make eight requests:1) They state that there has been a great dispute between them and the Bishop of Condom over the killing of a man in a place called Couchet, over which, although it is in the bailiwick of Condom, the Bishop claims jurisdiction. They ask that the Seneschal of Gascony or his lieutenant might be ordered to provide a swift remedy.2) They ask that, because of this dispute and others that might arise, the Constable or his lieutenant might be ordered to give them a transcript of the pariage of Condom, drawn up by a notary and sealed with the King's seal of Gascony, so that they can better defend their right.3) They request a balance to weigh the corn brought to the mill and the bread sold in the town, as in other towns of the Agenais.4) They request a fair with the customs and tolls usual in the Agenais, and ask the King to ask the Bishop of Condom to assent. And if he does not, they ask the King to grant it anyway.5) They state that when Amaury de Creoun was Seneschal, he granted them a toll to build a stone bridge in Condom, and that the King then granted this toll to them for four years. The Bishop is trying to prevent the levy of this toll, because of the aforesaid dispute. They ask that he might be ordered to allow it to be levied, and if he will not, that the Seneschal or his lieutenant might be ordered to have it done.6) They asks that the King's officials might intervene in their town only in case of crime or of unheard of excesses committed within the last fifteen days.7) They state that the Bailiff of Condom used to have a wardship of a fair in a place called Moncrabeau, but that the lords of the castle of Moncrabeau prevent him from exercising this wardship. They ask that the Seneschal of Gascony or the Agenais might be ordered to uphold him in this wardship.8) They state that the Bihsop's people have recently fatally wounded certain servants of the Bailiff of Condom, and chased the Bailiff's lieutenant and some of the consuls of Condom with force and arms, and imprisoned the lieutenant and others; and the Bishop has excommunicated the consuls and put the town under interdict, because they aided the Bailiff and defended the King's rights. They request a remedy and justice, and that the King's right might be maintained.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] It is to be done as is requested.[To second] A copy of the clause concerning the first article is to be made for them.[To third] This is to be passed to the Seneschal of Gascony, and he is to do what is to be done for the King and for public utility.[To fourth] This is to be passed to the Seneschal as above. And letters of request are to be sent to the Bishop, asking him to consent.[To fifth] It is to be done as is requested.[To sixth] The Seneschal and justices will make or deny interventions in these cases if they should do so by right, because they ought to know the laws. They will instruct the provosts and bailiffs in these cases on what is right, and recourse will be had to them.[To seventh] It is to be done, calling those who are to be called.[To eighth] The Seneschal is to be ordered to do full justice to them swiftly.[None on dorse]
