Nature of request
Saubat de Mente, on behalf of the Mayor, jurats and community of Bayonne, asks the King and council to grant six articles:1) He asks the King to confirm all the privileges granted by his predecessors.2) He requests letters patent to all the ports of England that the people of Bayonne are to be free of the tax of . . . pence in the pound; and that this should be enrolled in all these ports.3) He requests letters patent to the Constable of Bordeaux to put into execution all the privileges that the people of Bayonne have concerning wine, so that they are not obstructed on this in future.4) He requests letters patent to Matthew Gournay ordering him to keep and preserve their privileges concerning ships broken on the land, and to return what he took from John de Priolat's ship.5) He requests confirmation of an ordinance that if anyone from Bayonne wounds or kills a stranger then the person from Bayonne should be quit in the same way that the stranger would have been in his country if he had wounded or killed someone from Bayonne.6) He requests a letter patent to the Bailiff of Marensin not to obstruct them in the matter of the vines or wine belonging to the people of Bayonne.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] It is to be done, for all those that they have reasonably used by grant of the King's progenitors.[To second] They are to have writs on their charters to the present and future customs officers.[To third] The charter concerning this privilege is to be examined, and they are to have a writ to the constable on this.[To fourth] They are to have such a command for this as can reasonably be given in the case.[To fifth] It is to be as has been customary in the past.[To sixth] They are to have an order to the said Bailiff not to molest them in this regard, contrary to justice and reason, and another command to the King's lieutenant in Aquitaine and to the Seneschal of the Landes, and to each of them, to hear the complaints of the people of Bayonne, to do justice to them.[None on dorse]
