Description

Gentlemen of Bordeaux.

King and council.
Nature of request
The men of Bordeaux make two complaints:1) They state that John Colom who has recently been in England has obtained a letter patent from the King that no nobleman (gentil) should be a burgess or jurat of the city. They state that this is likely to lead to their ruin, and that they have done nothing to forfeit their franchise in this way, and ask that they might recover their franchise.2) They state that although there have never been fewer than twenty-four jurats in their city, John Colom has obtained by request that there should only be twelve. They ask the King to take advice, and to ordain as seems good to the council for his honour, as twelve can more easily form a hostile faction than twenty-four.
