Description
Petitioners
Raymond de Montaut (Monhaut), Lord of Mussidan.
Name(s)
de Montaut (Monhaut), Lord of Mussidan, Raymond
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Raymond de Montaut, Lord of Mussidan, makes requests:1) He states that he has always served the King well and loyally, but has served at his own expense since the Prince left the land, and has had great costs and expenses, to the point of being ruined. He requests some ordinance to keep him from harm.2) He states that he has lost his lands and has nothing to live on, and asks that he might have the commune of Mussidan and Poy, and the honour of [...].3) He asks that the gift of certain places and rents made to him by the Prince (La Rochelle, the bailiwick of Nancras, Seint Chastier, Seint Loy) might be confirmed.4) He asks that the gift of certain places and rents made to him by John of Gaunt (Cursyn, and Lalinde in Perigord), which are still in the hands of the King's enemies, might be confirmed.5) He asks that he and his heirs might have the town and castellanry of Bourdeilles, which belonged to the count of Perigord, a rebel.6) He states that the Prince gave him £6 annually from the customs of Libourne, to be received from the hands of the Constable of Bordeaux. He asks that he might receive it from the hands of the Mayor of Libourne.7) He states that for the arrears of this £6 the constable assigned him the lands of Condat and Barbas, which belonged to Bertran de Fussat, rebel, and asks that he might hold them as his inheritance, as he will never be paid the arrears.8) [An eighth petition, asking that he and his heirs might be given lands belonging to the Count of Perigord, and the response granting this, appears to have been deleted.]9) He states that his squire, William de Motes, has lost his castle and been taken prisoner, and asks that he might have the bailiwick of Sainte-Foy for term of life in consideration of his losses.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first petition] With regard to the first petition concerning 8000 marks, it seems that it would be good for the King's Treasurer to be ordered treat with the petitioner about this sum, and considering his great loyalty and good service, past and future, to deal with him so that he considers himself content; and this is very necessary and expedient. [In another hand] It is thought that this will pass lightly.[To second] With regard to the second petition it seems that, considering the great losses and damages that he has sustained because of his loyalty, the King of his grace can, if he please, grant his demand. [In another hand] It is to be . . .[To third] With regard to the third petition it seems [in another hand] to the lords that if the said petitioner can conquer them, that he can have them for term of life, saving always the King's resort.[To fourth] With regard to the fourth petition it seems [in another hand] that if the said petitioner can conquer them, that he can have them for term of life, saving always the King's resort. [In another hand] When the peace is made, everyone will have his own inheritance.[To fifth] With regard to the fifth petition [deleted] it seems that if it please the King the gift should properly be made [in another hand] it seems to the lords that he should have the said place and castellanry for term of his life, saving the . . . inheritance to the King.[To sixth] With regard to the sixth petition, it seems that the gift should be confirmed on the customs of Libourne, and that he can receive them from the hands of the Mayor of Libourne for the time being, and that the Mayor will be accountable for this £6 to the Constable of Bordeaux for the time being, and will be charged for this in his account.[To seventh] With regard to the seventh, it seems that if it pleases the King, the gift should be made, provided that the claim is true.[To ninth] The King wishes to be informed of what he/it is; and when he has this information the King will be advised.[None on dorse]
