Reference
SC 8/262/13067
Date
[? c. 1357-? c. 1369]
Description
Petitioners
Hugh Pelerin, clerk, proctor of Cardinal de Pirgort (Perigord).
Name(s)
Pelerin, Hugh
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
clerk, proctor of Cardinal de Pirgort (Perigord)
Nature of request
Hugh Pelerin states that Cardinal de Pirgort, as prebendary of Thame in Lincoln cathedral, ought to receive an annual rent from certain lands in Towersey, but that these have been taken into the King's hand by the escheator of Buckinghamshire, and he will neither remove the King's hand or to explain why. He therefore requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ to provide information on the cause in Chancery, and sicut alias and cum pluries and attachment if he does not wish to obey; and on this information justice is to be done.
Places mentioned
Lincoln, [Lincolnshire]
Thame, [Oxfordshire]
Towersey, Buckinghamshire.
People mentioned
[Elie Talleyrand] de Pirgort (Perigord), Cardinal [priest of St Peter ad Vincula], prebendary of Thame in Lincoln cathedral.
Note
Elie Talleyrand de Perigord became prebendary of Thame in 1335, but because he was an adherent of the King of France the prebend was granted to William Kildesby on 10 June 1341 (CPR 1340-3 pp.226 and 348). The cardinal was able to enter again in October 1357-September 1358, and thence yearly until September 1368-1369 (Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae 1300-1541, Lincoln Diocese, p.116). The petition is most probably from this period. The petitioner's prebend of Stoke in Lincoln cathedral was in the King's hand on 23 January 1375 as a result of his adhesion to the King's enemies (CPR 1374-7 p.44), and his estate in this prebend was revoked on 20 January 1376 (CPR 1374-7 pp.211-212). His prebend of Beaminster and Netherbury in Salisbury cathedral was given into the keeping of John Bulhog on 16 December 1375 (CFR 1368-77 p.317).
