Reference
SC 8/262/13054
Date
[c. 1345]
Description
Petitioners
Andrew Peverel, knight.
Name(s)
Peverel, Andrew
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Andrew Peverel states that he brought an assize of novel dissesin against Eleanor, Countess of Ormond, and others, concerning a quarter of the manor of Gomshall, but that she has claimed that she holds half the manor, containing this quarter, for term of her life of the King's lease, with reversion to the King, and that she cannot therefore answer without the King. Andrew requests a writ to the justices to proceed in the plea.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ in Chancery to the justices to go ahead in the process, if such a plea is pending: provided that they do not proceed to render judgment without consulting the King.
Places mentioned
Gomshall, Surrey.
People mentioned
Eleanor [Butler], Countess of Ormond.
Note
CCR 1343-6, pp.586-7 is dated 6 June 1345, and would seem to be from a later stage in proceedings than this petition; it does however, give a rough date. The manor was still in the King's hand in 1332 (CIM 1307-49. no.1280).
