[c. 1323]
Description
Petitioners
Gilbert Haukyn of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Name(s)
Haukyn, Gilbert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Gilbert Haukyn states that his three granaries were occupied for a year and a half by the King's corn, having been commandeered by Robert de Notingham and Richard Demeldon, Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne, who assessed his rent at 6 marks annually, giving a total of £6. He was later assigned 36 quarters and 1 bushel of oats for this, as happened to others whose granaries were occupied, but he refused this corn, as he wished to have the £6 allowed against £18 he owed the King for victuals; and because of this he has now been defrauded of his £6. He requests grace and a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer, Barons and Chamberlains of the Exchequer are to be ordered that, if the said Gilbert owes a debt to the King for the said victuals, and it can be established by testimony of good people or in another manner that the farm for his granaries is still due, they are to allow what is reasonably due to him in the debt he owes the King. And if he has paid the King the debt for the victuals, then they are to give the said Gilbert payment or an assignment for what is due to him for his said farm.
Places mentioned
