Nature of request
Elizabeth, wife of William de Nevill of Pickhill, and Joan, wife of William Bruys, state that eight days after the feast of St John in the King's forty-seventh year, their husbands were handed over to the French as hostages for the salvation of Brest, by Lord Neville, then lieutenant of the town, who promised to have them released. They have been in a harsh prison, often on point of death, for three years and their ransom has been so high that it cannot be paid. Elizabeth and Joan ask the King and council to ordain for their deliverance, and that they might be acquitted for their losses and damages as reason demands.
