Reference
SC 8/261/13043
Date
[c. 1334]
Description
Petitioners
Henry de Caserwick, Abbot of Crowland.
Name(s)
de Caserwick, Henry
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Abbot of Crowland
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged and partly illegible.]The Abbot of Crowland states that in the time of three kings he and his predecessors have had a discharge of a sum demanded from them in the Exchequer to marry the daughter of the King's grandfather, for two knights' fees in Langtoft and Witham. He states that they have held these manors since the foundation of their church, 100 years before the Conquest, and have never been charged with such services, or with any other secular services for them, and that although he has been completely discharged of this sum, as can be seen from the process held on this, he can have no delivery. He asks that the Barons might be ordered to proceed to judgment on this matter, without further delay.
Nature of endorsement
The commands which have previously been sent to the [Exchequer], which are enrolled in Chancery, are to be examined, and the Treasurer and Barons are again to be ordered that, when they have examined the inquisitions and other pieces of evidence that they have before them, they are to proceed to the final discharge of the Abbot in this matter, according to the form of the said commands; and if there is a reasonable cause why they should not do this, they are to provide information on this reason in Chancery, and the Chancellor, when he has called the justices or others of the council, is further to do justice.
Places mentioned
Crowland, [Lincolnshire]
Langtoft, [Lincolnshire]
Wyham (Witham on the Hill), [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
Edward [I], King of England
Henry de Bayouse, collector of the aid to marry Edward I's daughter.
Note
CCR 1333-7 p.232 is dated 5 July 1334, and would seem to be in response to the petition printed in Rot. Parl. vol. II pp.70b-71a (no.3), which is probably earlier than this one. However, the mention of three kings clearly dates this petition to the reign of Edward III, and it would seem to be of similar date.
