Description
Petitioners
Commons of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
Addressees
King and council in parliament.
Nature of request
The commons of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire state that they petitioned Edward III at the parliament held at Westminster in the twenty-second year of his reign, complaining that the sheriffs of their counties were being charged with the full farm, although Edward III had granted various franchises to various people, and asking that they might be charged only with the profits they received, or that they might be discharged of the sum granted away. An inquiry was ordered, and the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer were ordered to discharge the sheriffs of an appropriate sum according to its findings. The inquiry was held, and they again petitioned Edward III in parliament, and the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer were again ordered to discharge the sheriffs; but they have continued to charge all the sheriffs since then with the old farm. They ask that a writ of the great seal might be sent to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to discharge the sheriffs of this sum in perpetuity.
