Reference
SC 8/261/13030
Date
[1358-? 1362]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Beeleigh.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Beeleigh state that it was found before the escheator of Essex in the King's thirtieth year that Catherine de London held a third of the manor of Great Parndon, with a third of the advowson of the church, of the King as of the honour of Boulogne, and that she held other lands in the same vill of the Abbot and convent, and that she died without an heir. Her lands and tenements were then seized by the King, and they sued to the council to have the lands held of them as their escheat. A writ was granted to the escheator to remove his hand, and they were in possession until the beginning of last August, when they were expelled from their lands by virtue of a patent made by the King to his son, Edmund de Langley, by his attorney, Thomas Bergeveny, without calling them to answer: wrongly, and contrary to the law and the statute. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The said patent and also the writ by which they had restitution are to be examined in Chancery; and when the parties have been called, justice is further to be done.
Places mentioned
Beeleigh, [Essex]
Peryndon (Great Parndon), Essex.
People mentioned
Catherine de London
Edmund de Langele (Langley)
Thomas Bergeveny (Abergavenny), attorney of Edmund de Langley.
Note
CCR 1354-60 p.460 is dated 26 July 1358 and would seem to be the order to remove the King's hand mentioned in the petition. As Edmund of Langley is not given any title, the petition would seem to date from after July 1358, but before his creation as Earl of Cambridge in 1362.
