Description
Petitioners
Richard of Bury, Bishop of Durham.
Name(s)
Bury, Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Bishop of Durham
Nature of request
Richard, Bishop of Durham, states that when, in the time of the King's grandfather, the bridge at Berwick-upon-Tweed was broken, it was agreed between the then King of Scotland and the Bishop of Durham that the King would have a ferry from Berwick to Tweedmouth, and the Bishop would have a ferry from Tweedmouth to Berwick, and that the profits would be shared equally between the King and the Bishop. This continued until the sixth year of the present King's reign, when David de Bruys rose up against the King and burnt and destroyed Tweedmouth. And then when Berwick came into the King's hand the temporalities of the bishopric of Durham were also in his hand after the death of Bishop Lewis, and so the King's ministers have had the entire profit of the ferry since then, to the disinheritance of his church of Durham. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The Sheriff and other ministers of Berwick are to be ordered that, if they can find by good inquisition of people both of Scotland and of England that the Bishop was seised of the ferry before the time of Robert de Bruys, they are to let the Bishop's ministers have the ferry in future as his predecessors had, and to cease to commit such oppressions against the people.
