Description
Petitioners
Richard, Prior of ....
Name(s)
Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Prior of ...
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged.]Prior Richard states that Henry, his predecessor, sued to have brought before the justices the record and process of a case held in the fourteenth year of the King's grandfather, to have errors in it corrected, but that delays have occurred in this. He asks that the Treasurer, Barons and Chamberlains of the Exchequer might be ordered to inform the justices on this matter directly, and that the justices might then [proceed to correct] any errors they find.
Nature of endorsement
The justices are to be ordered that if it is returned before them that no original or judicial writ is found, they are to proceed in the matter according to the law of the land, provided that they do not proceed to judgment without consulting the King.
People mentioned
Henry, formerly Prior of [...]
[Edward I], King of England.
Note
Tentatively dated on the basis of the hand. A note on the guard suggests that the priory might be Wenlock, where Henry, prior 1284-1319, was succeeded by Guichard de Caro Loco, who was still prior in 1344 - although the identification of Richard with Guichard is by no means obvious.
