[This petition is badly faded.]William Percy, sheriff of Sussex, states that on the day of the Ascension last, the Mayor, bailiffs and community of Chichester disrupted the holding of the county court with force and arms. He asks that it might in future be held in another place, as he and his ministers do not dare to approach Chichester for fear of the people.
Nature of endorsement
Robert Bealknap and other sufficient people are to be appointed by commission to inquire into, hear and determine the matter; and the Sheriff is to be ordered by writ to hold the court at Lewes until the matter has been heard. And the said commissioners are to be named by the said Robert.
