Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/261/13003
Date
[c. 1343]
Description
Petitioners
Commons of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The commons of Newcastle upon Tyne state that they have suffered greatly from the great sums demanded of them by William de Kildesby, and from the heavy taxes imposed upon them despite the great destruction and losses inflicted upon them by the Scots and in other ways, and ask that they might be pardoned the 108 sacks of wool demanded from them as their share of the 30000 sacks of wool granted by the commons for the last two years. They also ask that the record and process held before Thomas Surteys and his companions might be examined, and that the onerous fines might be reduced according to the grant made to them by the King before he left for Brittany, and the reduced sums allowed against the debt owed to them by the King.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.
Places mentioned
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland]
Scotland
Britanny, [France].
People mentioned
William de Kildesby
Thomas Surteys (Surtees)
[John Stratford], Archbishop of Canterbury
[William de Clinton], Earl of Huntingdon.
Note
The grant of two ninths and fifteenths made in the parliament of March 1340 was commuted into a grant of 30000 sacks of wool in the parliament of April 1341. CPR 1340-3 pp.452-3 is dated 6 April 1342, and would seem to be the commission referred to here. CCR 1343-6 p.195 is dated 15 November 1343, p.213 is dated 2 December 1343, and p.558 is dated 17 March 1345. All these suggest a date of c. 1343 for the petition.
