Nature of request
[This petition is damaged and faded.]William de Ros of Helmsley states that his ancestor, in the time of the King's father, made an assart in his wood of Linton, which is outside the bounds of the forest [of Galtres], but that the King's father, understanding that it was within the forest, charged him 20s annually for it. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The justice of the forest is to be ordered to inquire into whether the said assart was within the bounds of the forest at the time when it was made or not, and if it is now outside the bounds according to the perambulation and riding, and from what time the 20s have been paid, and into other articles touching the said business. And when the inquisition has been returned, justice is further to be done.
