Nature of request
Rolandin de Podie states that the King and council ordained that all merchants of Spain, Bayonne and elsewhere should bring their goods to Sandwich for the benefit of the realm of England, and that on account of news he had of their stay there, the King, in order to prevent the Spanish merchants carrying their goods out of the country, leading to shortages, ordered the merchants of Lucca to buy up all the merchandise of the Spanish merchants and their companions, promising to give them an allowance for any loss they would incur from such a purchase. They have lost 3000 marks and more in this transaction, but have had no allowance. They ask that this sum might be allowed against the debt that they owe the King.
