Nature of request
The people of Devon state that the officials of the Bishop of Exeter and his commissaries and archdeacons and their officials and commissaries are, in several ways which they list, abusing their power and usurping the King's franchises in Devon, to their great harm and impoverishment. They request a remedy for these abuses.
Nature of endorsement
Before the King and the great council in the presence of the Bishop of Exeter.They are to have a general prohibition that they are not to hold pleas concerning any things of which cognisance belongs to the King's court. And if anyone is summoned to answer on these, he is to come to Chancery and have a remedy there.
