Maroons of Accompong Town: reports on their refusal to pay taxes and encloses copy of a proclamation dated 16 April 1883 confirming that the Maroons 'never have been and are not now liable to perform military service, except such as might be required of any of Her Majesty's subjects within the Island; that the Government of the Island have not and do not pretend to have any special claim upon the services of the Maroons; and that the Maroons have been and still are entitled to all the rights, privileges and immunities of British subjects in as ample a manner as any other people in this Island without distinction of race or colour.'
