Description

Folio 243-264. Small cover note (possibly an internal Home Office one) relative to the disturbances at the election at Birmingham, Warwickshire. There is a letter from George Barker regarding the riots at Birmingham in July and criticising the military powers for not being active enough against the rioters. He is also not pleased with 'imputation' drawn from his statements about Sir Maxwell Wallace (being asleep or drunk/not drunk on horseback). Also enclosed are letters concerning the riots from:

  • Clement Ingleby, complaining of the conduct and motives ascribed to him and defending the actions of Lloyd Williams
  • James Taylor, accounting for his actions at the time of the riot
  • Report from J W Whateley, George Whateley, Edward Armfield, John M Knott, Henry Smythies and John B Hebbert, magistrates, on the Birmingham riots and their concerns regarding Sir Maxwell Wallace's conduct during the riots.

[Folio 242 is the front cover].
