1 individual petition (the prisoner) and 1 collective petition (30 people, citizens of Inch including two ministers) on behalf of John McClunie, convicted at the Circuit Court held at Ayr on 20 September 1827 of the theft of cheese. There is a letter from Gilbert Nish, writer, drawing attention to the history of mental weakness in other members of the McClunie family. Grounds for clemency: the accused is weak minded, unfit to work, age (over 50 years), no previous convictions, had was excused from serving in the militia in 1812 due to his mental capacity and the prisoner was not legally represented at his trial. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Annotated: 'Refd [refused] will not be sent out of the country'. AO9. [Scot]
