1 collective petition (the prisoners) from Elizabeth Wylie, Elizabeth Gardner and Margaret Gardner, colliers' wives, convicted on at the Spring Circuit Court held in Glasgow on 3 May 1827, of assault and riot in March 1827 caused by a strike concerning wages. There is a certificate of ill health from Dr James Corkindale; a certificate of good behaviour from William Brebner, prison governor and 4 character references. Grounds for clemency: the assault had occurred during a miners' strike which was settled peacefully, the prisoners had no previous record of violence, their behaviour in gaol was exemplary and their imprisonment is detrimental to their health and their children's welfare. Initial sentences: Elizabeth Wylie 24 months; Elizabeth Gardner 14 months; Margaret Gardner 9 months. Annotated: 'Petition not granted'. AO2. [Scot]
