Description

Report of David Boyle, Lord Justice Clerk on 1 individual petition (the prisoner) from Peter Oliver, flesher [butcher], convicted at the Circuit Court held at Edinburgh on 9 July 1827 of the theft of 13 sheep from William Chisholm, farmer. There is a covering letter from Robert Ainslie, writer to the signet enclosing 6 certificates of good character from Andrew Amos, corn dealer; William Amos, farmer; Douglas Ainslie; Hector Eliot, William Dryden, skinner and Thomas Gray and a copy of the receipt of HM pardon on condition of transportation for life from James Grahame, on behalf of the Crown Agent. Grounds for clemency: the jury's unanimous verdict was accompanied by a recommendation to mercy, six certificates of good character were produced in support of the prisoner's petition for the commutation of the death sentence to transportation for life and the prisoner describes the value of his agricultural and other experience to a new world economy. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: transportation for life. Annotated: 'Pardon Condl [Conditional] Prepd. [Prepared] July 1827'. AN 12. [Scot]
