Report of William Rae, Lord Advocate, on 1 individual petition (the prisoner) on behalf of William Digan, agricultural labourer, convicted at Glasgow on 25 October 1826 of 'wickedly and feloniously' discharging a loaded firearm on 19 August 1826. There is a copy of a letter from Archibald Alison, Advocate Depute and a covering letter from H D Barclay, writer. Grounds for clemency: Digan had reasonable grounds for supposing that the victim was in the act of stealing from a turnip field where Digan had been set as a night guard, the victim only received superficial wounds and was able to make his own way home after the incident, Digan believed he was doing his duty and the sentence was excessive given the nature of the injury caused and the impact his incarceration would have on his family. Initial sentence: 12 months imprisonment in the Bridewell at Glasgow. Recommendation: no mercy. AN1 [Scot]
