1 individual petition (Elizabeth Downs, the prisoner's wife) on behalf of William Downs, coachbuilder, convicted at the High Court of Justiciary in June 1826 of theft from Messrs Gall & Thompson, his employer. There are two character references for Mr & Mrs Downs from William Graham and Peter Wilson both of Dalkeith; and letters from William Graham and A Leslie Melville. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner confessed his guilt and pleaded guilty, the prisoner's wife petitions for her husband's sentence to be served in Scotland in the hope that he will be able to contribute to his family's needs. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Petition refused. AM 23. [Scot]
