1 individual petition (Thomas Carlyle, the prisoners' counsel) and 1 collective petition (the prisoners) from George Wilson, shoemaker and Robert Wilson, tailor, convicted at the High Court of Justiciary held at Edinburgh on 18 December 1826 of theft, value 6/-. Grounds for clemency: the prisoners are innocent of the crime, ask that their sentences be commuted to imprisonment in Scotland, request permission to continue in their trades, neither prisoner has a previous criminal record and their employers attest their good character, family members have given long, loyal service to the king's army (Richard Wilson, 78th Regiment of Foot, George Mc Lachlan, 75th Regiment of Foot, John McDonald, 42nd Regiment of Foot) and both prisoners have large families who will be left destitute should they be transported. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. AM 12. [Scot]
