1 individual petition (Isabel Grant, the wife of the convict) on behalf of Isabel Grant who petitions to accompany her husband, James Ross, small wares merchant and retailer, convicted at Inverness on 9 September 1826 for culpable homicide [shooting] against William Clark, blacksmith. There are certificates of good character for Ross from 5 people of Upper Ballivard[?] and Achnagairn [Inverness-shire]; letters from Lord Fife; James Houston JP; Patrick Cruikshank, Elder; William Grant, minister; Grigor Grant, James Mackay, Donald Grant, William Laing and William Grant; 9 people of Drummossie and a copy of the 'Notes taken at a meeting with James Ross in the jail at Elgin'. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner has five children to support, previous good character, denies previous experience of firearms and admits to being drunk at the time of the offence. Initial sentence: transportation for life. Annotated: 'Refused'. AM 8. [Scot].
