1 individual petition (Elizabeth Baxter, the prisoner's mother) on behalf of Peter Baxter, apprentice, convicted at the Circuit Court of Justiciary held in Glasgow in April 1819, for housebreaking and theft against Mr Rogers, haberdasher and Mr Coats, grocer, both of Greenock [Renfrewshire]. The petitioner asks for the return of her son to the United Kingdom after serving 7 years transportation. There is a covering letter to the petition from Elizabeth Baxter, a letter from the prisoner in Sydney to his parents in Scotland and a statement of good character of the prisoner from Hugh Mc Donald, former master to whom the prisoner was apprenticed. Grounds for clemency: youth (15 years), the small value of the goods stolen, the punishment should be for men who are 'incorrigible', previous good character, was learning a trade as a tinsmith, and the prisoner was seduced into the crime. Initial sentence: transportation for life to New South Wales. Annotated: 'nil'. AM 2. [Scot]
