1 collective petition (7 people including the prisoner's brother Gavin Alston, magistrates from Hamilton [Lanarkshire] and the ministers and elders of Dalsey[?]) on behalf of Alexander Alston, tailor, who falsely added his brother's name to a bill of exchange held by William Richmond, and was convicted of forgery at the Circuit Court held at Glasgow. There is a covering letter from Lord Lauderdale to the Home Secretary. Grounds for clemency: absence of fraudulent intent, willingness of prisoner's brother to repay the money owed, prisoner's previous good character, present weak state of mind, period of detention before trial was adequate punishment and the sentence imposed and was the minimum allowable for the offence in question. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. AM 1. [Scot]
