Report of William Robert Hay on 1 individual petition (George Edwards, former soldier in the King's Own Dragoons, the prisoner's husband [details of service given]) on behalf of Margaret Edwards, convicted at the Manchester Sessions [Lancashire Quarter Sessions] in July 1802 for the theft and pawning of a pair of sheets, property of ------ Atkinson. There is a letter from William Robert Hay stating that he has requested information from the 'Regular Register' of prisoners at Manchester. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner had been 'persuaded by the wicked' and 'being young caused her to commit a fault' and her husband, a dyer but formerly a well thought of private in the 3rd Regiment of Dragoons for 13 years, he was now 'in a melancholy situation', while her husband was serving overseas the prisoner was led into crime by others. Initial sentence: transportation. Recommendation: no mercy, as the prisoner had 2 previous convictions in 1796 and 1798 [details given] for similar crimes and was 'loose, idle and disorderly'. Folios 150-155.
